Joseph Sandoval
Kinesiology Student at UHCL & Neurobiology Research Assistant at UTMB
Joseph Sandoval is a kinesiology B.S. student at the University of Houston-Clear Lake and a researcher in the Department of Neurobiology at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston, Texas. His work centers on spinal cord injury recovery, motor control, and the quantitative analysis of locomotion. He is interested in how movement patterns change after injury and how objective measures of gait can make recovery more measurable and comparable across studies.
At UTMB, Joseph focuses on data-intensive workflows that turn raw movement into reliable metrics. He builds real-time markerless pose-estimation pipelines with custom hardware and software, and develops analysis tools that connect kinematics to interpretable outcomes. He also created SIESTA, a custom pose-estimation system designed for high-throughput locomotion analysis.
His technical stack includes Python, MATLAB, and deep-learning frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, and MLX, with an emphasis on efficient GPU-accelerated workflows. Joseph has worked as a NASM certified personal trainer (Anytime Fitness, 2022-2024) and tutored at UHCL (2023-2024). He speaks English and Spanish and plans to pursue a PhD in Rehabilitative Sciences along with a Doctor of Physical Therapy.
